Attractiveness on television?

Anyone ever notice how tv stations always have good looking people broadcasting the news or weather. If noone is suppose to judge on appearance and employers are all equal opportunity, why is it just a coincidence that only attractive people make it on live tv? I notice that mostly all of the female meteorologists on tv are very beautiful. Is this to get the viewer to watch so the station gets better ratings? I just find this to be very disturbing. We are all suppose to think that this is not the case, but we all know deep down inside it is true sadly.

  1. While I can see what you are saying is mostly the case, I don't think it's always true; I think Katie Couric is funny looking and always has been. And I could list others that aren't attractive in the least, but most do seem to fit a certain body type and style to some degree.

Either your discussion has merit or people we don't define as "attractive" don't apply for positions that would put them on live television - if you thought you were ugly or unattractive, would you broadcast it to the whole world? Just more food for thought, I suppose.

  2. I see what your saying, most people who do think they are unattractive would not want to be on television. I have just always wondered about this, it does definitely help with ratings im sure though, which is a bonus to any network.

  3. I agree with you, Mark. (And I like your blog topic!) I often feel that a tv broadcasters' looks are weighed more heavily than their actual talent. In reference to the aforementioned example about Katie Couric- I find this to be an rare example where talent was chosen over society's opinion of "beauty". However, I find that on tv there are many more "beautiful" broadcasters with less talent than talented broadcasters who society wouldn't consider beautiful.
